For many parents, one of the biggest concerns about a dental visit is whether their child will feel nervous or scared. Children often encounter unfamiliar sights, sounds, and instruments at the dentist, and it’s natural for them to feel uncertain about what will happen next.

That’s why pediatric dentists use child-centered communication techniques designed to build trust and confidence. One of the most effective and widely used approaches is the Tell, Show, Do technique.

At Gateway Little Smiles, this approach is an important part of creating positive dental experiences that help children feel comfortable, involved, and supported throughout their visit.

What Is the Tell, Show, Do Technique?

Tell, Show, Do is a behavior guidance technique commonly used in pediatric dentistry to introduce children to dental care in a way they can understand.

Rather than beginning treatment immediately, the dental team guides children through three simple steps:

  • Tell: Explain what is going to happen using simple, age-appropriate language.
  • Show: Demonstrate the instrument or procedure so the child knows what to expect.
  • Do: Perform the treatment exactly as it was explained.

By following this sequence, children have an opportunity to become familiar with each step before treatment begins.

Why Does Tell, Show, Do Work So Well?

Many childhood fears come from uncertainty rather than the dental procedure itself.

When children know what will happen next, they often feel more relaxed and willing to participate.

The Tell, Show, Do technique helps by:

  • Reducing surprises during the appointment
  • Building trust between the child and dental team
  • Encouraging cooperation through understanding
  • Giving children time to process new experiences
  • Creating a sense of predictability throughout the visit

Instead of feeling like something is happening to them, children become active participants in their dental care.

What Might Tell, Show, Do Look Like During a Visit?

Imagine your child is having their teeth examined.

Rather than immediately placing a dental mirror into their mouth, the pediatric dentist may first explain that the mirror is a small tool used to “count” or “look at” their teeth.

Next, the dentist may show the mirror to your child, allow them to touch it, or demonstrate how it works before gently using it during the examination.

The same approach can be used for many parts of a dental visit, helping children become familiar with each new step before it happens.

Helping Children Build Confidence Over Time

Every positive dental experience helps children become more comfortable with future visits.

As children learn that the dental team communicates clearly and follows through on what was explained, they begin developing trust and confidence. Over time, many children become increasingly relaxed because they know what to expect during their appointments.

This positive foundation can encourage lifelong healthy attitudes toward dental care and regular preventive visits.

Is Tell, Show, Do Used for Every Child?

Tell, Show, Do can benefit many children, but every child is unique.

Some children enjoy asking questions and learning about each instrument, while others prefer shorter explanations or need additional reassurance. Pediatric dentists adjust their communication based on each child’s age, developmental stage, personality, and comfort level.

This individualized approach helps ensure children receive care in a way that supports both their emotional comfort and oral health needs.

What If My Child Is Still Nervous?

It’s completely normal for some children to feel anxious, especially during new experiences.

Even when the Tell, Show, Do technique is used, some children may need additional support based on their individual needs or the type of treatment being performed.

When appropriate, pediatric dentists may discuss other comfort measures, including nitrous oxide or general anesthesia, if they are clinically appropriate for a child’s specific situation. These options are always recommended based on an individualized evaluation rather than as a routine part of every visit.

Parents Play an Important Role, Too

Parents can help reinforce the Tell, Show, Do approach before a dental appointment by speaking positively about the dentist and avoiding language that may unintentionally create fear.

Simple phrases such as “The dentist is going to count your teeth” or “They’re going to help keep your smile healthy” often encourage children to approach their visit with curiosity instead of worry.

Working together, parents and the dental team can help children develop confidence that lasts well beyond a single appointment.

Creating Positive Dental Experiences That Last

At Gateway Little Smiles, helping children feel comfortable is just as important as providing excellent dental care. Our signature Tell, Show, Do approach allows children to understand each step of their visit, helping build trust, confidence, and positive dental experiences from an early age.

I gave this place of business a 5 star because they are pretty awesome! However what i experienced today was a bit confusing. I took my 7 yr old for tooth extraction (first time ever getting a tooth pulled) when they came out to get him I was instructed to stay in waiting area..I proceed to ask why and was told “we try to do things without the parent “ now if you’re teaching independence I get it but, explain that to the parent and give them that option still . Mind you there were 3 parents after me that went back with their children , My son went back without me and ended up soiling himself which has never happened (he’s 7). I was not pleased, he told me beforehand that he was scared. Will I still recommend this place? Absolutely! But I will be verbal next time about going back with my son. I do want to mention I spoke to the front desk about it and she offered for me to go back but my attitude wasn’t in the right place. I believe if I went back with him he would have never peed himself.
