Gentle, Compassionate Tooth Extractions for Kids

When it comes to gentle and skilled tooth extractions in Greater St. Louis, Gateway Little Smiles is here to help. Whether you need a tooth removed due to decay, trauma, or other dental concerns, our experienced team ensures a comfortable and compassionate experience every step of the way.

What Are Tooth Extractions?

A tooth extraction is removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. While this may sound unsettling, in many cases, it’s an important step to protect your oral health. At Gateway Little Smiles, we carefully assess your needs to recommend the best action, ensuring you feel confident about your dental care plan.

Why Might a Tooth Need to Be Extracted?

There are several reasons a tooth may require extraction, including:

  • Severe Tooth Decay or Damage—Extraction may be the best option if a tooth has damage beyond repair via fillings, crowns, or other methods.
  • Overcrowding—Sometimes, teeth need to be removed because there isn’t enough room in the mouth for all the teeth.
  • Impacted Teeth—Wisdom teeth often become impacted, meaning they don’t fully emerge or position themselves properly, potentially causing pain and infection.
  • Gum Disease—Advanced stages of gum disease can weaken the structures supporting your teeth, leading to the need for extraction.
  • Trauma—Accidents or injuries may leave a tooth severely compromised and beyond repair.

The Tooth Extraction Procedure

We understand that undergoing a tooth extraction can cause some anxiety, so we pride ourselves on making the experience as smooth and stress-free as possible.

  1. Consultation and Assessment—We’ll perform a thorough evaluation, including digital X-rays, to determine the best course of action before any extraction.
  2. Numbing the Area—We use effective local anesthesia to ensure you remain pain-free during the procedure.
  3. Extraction Process—For simple extractions, the tooth is loosened with specialized tools and removed gently. A minor surgical procedure may be required for more complex extractions, such as removing impacted wisdom teeth.
  4. After-Care Instructions—Once we remove the tooth, you’ll receive detailed instructions for healing and recovery.

We provide a calm and caring environment to ensure your comfort.

What to Expect After a Tooth Extraction

Proper care is essential to promote healing and prevent complications following a tooth extraction. Our team at Gateway Little Smiles provides detailed, personalized care instructions, which often include the following recommendations:

  • Apply gauze to the extraction site to control bleeding.
  • Use an ice pack intermittently to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid drinking through a straw, smoking, or eating hard or crunchy foods for the first few days as the extraction site heals.
  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed to stay comfortable.
  • Keep the area clean by gently rinsing with warm salt water after the first 24 hours.

Healing typically takes 7-10 days. If you notice any signs of infection, such as swelling, fever, or severe pain, contact us immediately for further evaluation and care.

Options for Replacing an Extracted Tooth

After an extraction, it’s important to consider replacing the missing tooth to maintain your oral health and the appearance of your smile. Missing teeth can cause neighboring teeth to shift into the space and lead to bite alignment issues. At Gateway Little Smiles, we offer several options for tooth replacement, including:

  • Child Crowns – A permanent solution that feels and functions like a natural tooth.

Our team will work with you to determine the replacement option that best suits your needs, preferences, and budget.

I gave this place of business a 5 star because they are pretty awesome! However what i experienced today was a bit confusing. I took my 7 yr old for tooth extraction (first time ever getting a tooth pulled) when they came out to get him I was instructed to stay in waiting area..I proceed to ask why and was told “we try to do things without the parent “ now if you’re teaching independence I get it but, explain that to the parent and give them that option still . Mind you there were 3 parents after me that went back with their children , My son went back without me and ended up soiling himself which has never happened (he’s 7). I was not pleased, he told me beforehand that he was scared. Will I still recommend this place? Absolutely! But I will be verbal next time about going back with my son. I do want to mention I spoke to the front desk about it and she offered for me to go back but my attitude wasn’t in the right place. I believe if I went back with him he would have never peed himself.
